DRINKING ALCOHOL? Hmmm……………… SHIELD YOUR LIVER WITH HEPATOPROTECTIVE ANTIOXIDANTS!

Hi, I am AIVEER your WELLNESS GUIDE. This is our very first meet with you in bloggers. Yipeeee! It calls for a celebration & a celebration without ……… is nothing. Your guess is correct. Ha ha hahaha! What’s the big deal? Most of us enjoy sipping wine, beer or a cocktail now and then in celebration. But wait….it’s really gonna be a big deal coz moderation is the key to protect your health. Moderation means an average of one to two drinks per day for men & one drink per day for women.

BIG DEAL FOR YOUR LIVER!

Liver is the largest organ in the body with various functions. The most important function is the removal of toxins from the body’s blood supply and for this reason the liver is the most affected organ by alcohol. Excessive drinking of alcohol over years causes injury to the liver leading to the development of Alcohol Related Liver Disease (ARLD). It has been reported that 100% of heavy drinkers will develop fatty liver, the first stage of ARLD. In fatty liver fats build-up in the liver but the good thing is that if you control your alcohol intake it is reversible. Fatty liver when uncontrolled leads to LIVER FIBROSIS (development of abnormally large amounts of scar tissue in the liver) which is curable or reversible if detected early. However, if it remains undetected & the progression continues it can lead to LIVER CIRRHOSIS which is irreversible. In this the healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue and the liver is permanently damaged. Also do you know that in India, liver cirrhosis is the 10th most common cause of death. In few cases cirrhosis can lead to LIVER CANCER. In advanced cirrhosis, a LIVER TRANSPLANT may be the only option.

HOW DOES DRINKING ALCOHOL AFFECTS YOUR LIVER?

Alcohol is broken down by a liver enzyme known as Cytochrome P450. During this process the bad guys i.e., FREE RADICALS like nitric oxide, lipid peroxides, superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide etc. are generated which can damage your liver cells. Also, with alcohol intake there is a deficiency of antioxidant enzymes like SOD (superoxide dismutase), Catalase, GPx (glutathione peroxidase) & antioxidant vitamins like Vit. E & C in your body. The rise in free radicals and the fall in antioxidants in your body leads to OXIDATIVE STRESS which causes inflammation and liver injury leading to ARLD.

BUT THERE’S MORE TO THE STORY…..

Now ANTIOXIDANT, the hero comes into the story. These are molecules that scavenge and neutralize free radicals, thereby reducing the oxidative stress caused by the alcohol. But, in alcoholics the body fails to protect the liver because of deficiency of antioxidants.

THE TURNING POINT…..

I am very pleased to introduce you with your wellness partner “VITAMUZ GI”.  It contains STRONG HEPATOPROTECTIVE & ANTIOXIDANT MOLECULES like METHIONINE, BETA CAROTENE, VITAMIN C, VITAMIN E ACETATE, ZINC, MANGANESE, ORGANIC SELENIUM. Moderation is the key. However, abstinence always helps. Talk to your doctor to know whether moderation or abstinence-based approach is good for you and find out if you are at risk of developing liver disease.
